Don’t Make Federal Constitution An Issue – Muhyiddin
KUALA LUMPUR Oct 21 – The federal constitution which guarantees the special privileges and rights of the Malays and other races should not be made an issue, said Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said all quarters should understand the federal constitution as mentioned by Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when opening the general assembly.
“Don’t raise it (federal constitution ) again as we have to move forward. If the Malays don’t feel threatened, then the position of non-Malays are also guaranteed,” he told reporters here today.
The Deputy Prime Minister said as the largest Malay political party, Umno would explain and defend the federal constitution.
Umno also want public debate on the federal constitution to stop.
“We (Umno) have never discussed our (Malay) rights but have to respond when others make it an issue. Umno which defends Malay rights have to be firm so that we are not seen as cowards.
Muhyiddin said the federal constitution was raised by irresponsible groups out for political mileage.
“The Malays will have to work hard to succeed as what is enshrined in the federal constitution will not ensure our progress,” he added.
