Excerpts Of UMNO Presidential Address
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 – The following are excerpts of the speech of Umno President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when opening the party’s 61st general assembly at the PWTC here today.
The address, with the theme “Empowering the Race to Lead Prosperity,” stressed the special rights of the Malays which Najib said cannot be questioned and spoke of the role of Umno in developing the community.
*”We need leadership that is genuine with sincere understanding of the concept especially in a nation that is unique like Malaysia.”
*”When certain quarters start to question the position of the Malays as a race protected by specific rights, they arouse discontent and anger against us who are well known for being accommodating.”
*”If such polemics in the country is not properly handled we fear that it can threaten national unity.”
*”Opportunistic leaders who fish in muddy waters are foxes disguised as chicken who must be rejected.”
*”Further more, if an oath of loyalty is discarded as one pleases when it does not suit a certain taste or interest, mutual trust and respect will be destroyed and people will be infected by suspicion and will question one another’s motive and sincerity.”
*”As we all know, the position of the Malays and other Bumiputeras as well as the political interests of the other communities are enshrined in the Federal Constitution.”
*” Amendments to the related articles … cannot be made without the consent of the Conference of Rulers.”
*”Overall, like it or not, there is very strong reason for not allowing the articles to be amended except with the consent of the Conference of Rulers.
*”The continuous trust given by the other races should encourage the Malays to always better themselves and be a leading facilitator among the communities.”
*”The maneuverings of Umno as a party must change.”
*”Malays in the 21st century must ready themselves to benefit from existing rights.”
*”Hence, I as Umno president do not want to hear any excuse that the Malays are still weak as a result of nearly five centuries of colonialism.”
*”Umno will never allow the Malays to be a helpless race and strangers in their own land.”
