Govt Takes Continuous Measures To Help Low, Middle Income Groups
MUAR, Aug 15 – Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government had taken continuous measures to help the low- and middle-income groups to face the rising cost of living.
He said this was currently the government’s main focus after efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty had successfully been implemented.
“If they (low- and middle-income groups) earn around RM1,000, RM1,500 or RM2,500, they still have to pay rent, transportation cost and other expenses.
“Many of them also have children, so the amount of income like this is insufficient,” he said when meeting with residents of Kampung Bukit Treh at the AmIslamic Bank-Berita Harian “Semarak Ramadan” event, here, today.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said efforts to help these groups had been discussed at the Cabinet level and through his walkabouts with the local leaders, he also received feedback on how to tackle the rising cost of living.
“The price of consumer products is higher than before…I personally went to the wet markets and asked the consumers there. Basically, helping this (less privileged) group is a major agenda.
“We want them to know that while the government is doing transformation on the country, efforts are also being taken to help them,” he said.
On the eradication of hardcore poverty, Muhyiddin, who is also Pagoh member of parliament, said the programme had achieved extraordinary success and not many countries had been able to reach such a target.
“This approach is taken by the government because we don’t want any group to be left out of mainstream development.
“Before 2010, there were 43,000 families nationwide categorised as hardcore poor and the government has been giving them various assistance like food, training, business capital and crop seeds,” he added.
On the Semarak Ramadan programme, he said it was aimed at helping the poor and today’s location was the fifth after Melaka, Perak, Sabah and Terengganu since the beginning of the fasting month.
Earlier, Muhyiddin also spent time visiting the Ramadan bazaar at Dewan Jubli Intan, here.
