Govt Confident 5-6 GDP Growth This Year
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 – The government is still confident of achieving its gross domestic product (GDP) target of five to six per cent this year despite the global economic uncertainties.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, said the second half of this year will be slightly better driven by government projects.
“During the second half of this year, the economic transformation programme (ETP) projects and government-related projects will take off in a big way and this will contribute to the GDP this year,” he told reporters after witnessing the signing of an agreement here today between the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), SIRIM and Agrobank.
Nor Mohamed was responding to a question on whether the GDP growth for the second quarter will be lower than the first quarter as has been projected by several research houses.
“We still maintain our GDP target of five per cent to six per cent,” he said.
