Perkasa – Libya Can Be Like Iraq, Or Even Worse
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 – Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) today expressed its sadness over the latest development in Libya where air strikes by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) forces on Tripoli have killed and injured more than 1,300 innocent Libyans.
Perkasa international bureau chairman Datuk Mustapha Yaakub said even more regrettable was the silence on the part of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference), Arab League and Gulf Cooperation Council over the killing of Libyans by NATO forces.
“NATO has misused the ‘passport’ given by the United Nations Security Council by taking action on the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, on the pretext of saving the Libyans when in fact NATO is doing the killing,” he told Bernama today.
Mustapha said Libya could turn out to be like Iraq, or even worse, as the its social and population structure was qabilah (tribe)-based.
“A civil war will occur in Libya if Gaddafi’s successor possesses no charisma to bring together the various tribes, just like the inability of the late Iraqi president Saddam Hussein’s replacement in providing the kind of leadership that could unite the Sunni and Syiah Muslims in that country.”
He said Perkasa appealed to the UN Secretary-General to personally find asolution to the conflict in Libya without depending on NATO, which had clearly misused the UN Resolution 1973.
“This resolution has been used merely to oust Gaddafi, with NATO being a tool of the United States and United Kingdom whose motive is revenge on Gaddafi,” he said.
Among others, the resolution demanded an immediate ceasefire and the end of violence in Libya, including attacks on civilians, imposition of a no-fly zone over the country, and freezing of the assets of the Libyan government.
Mustapha said amid the turmoil, the people of Libya must be saved from NATO attacks.
