Khairy To Debate With Mat Sabu, No One Else

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 – Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today he would only want to debate with PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, popularly known as Mat Sabu, and no one else over the latter’s alleged praise for communist terrorists.

Khairy, in a Twitter post, said: “For me, what is important is Mat Sabu because he is the cause of today’s controversy. If they want to offer someone else, then never mind. But as long as it is KJ (Khairy Jamaluddin) vs Mat Sabu.”

He was responding to the invitation sent by PAS Youth to Umno Youth today, proposing a debate between him and PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan.

PAS Youth secretary Khairul Faizi Ahmad Kamil handed over the invitation to Khairy through Umno Youth secretary Megat Firdouz Megat Junid for a proposed debate on “seeking the truth behind the historical facts on the country’s independence”.

Mohamad Sabu had sparked a controversy by allegedly hailing as national heroes the communist terrorists who attacked and killed 25 policemen and their families at the Bukit Kepong police station near Muar in Johor in 1950.

The statement attributed to him sparked an outcry and condemnation by various quarters, particularly Umno and ex-policemen and ex-servicemen.

Following that, Khairy accepted an invitation from the PAS-led Kelantan government to debate the issue but insisted that his opponent be Mohamad Sabu.

Mohamad Sabu demanded instead that the debate should be between him and Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In his tweet today, Khairy said he had debated before with a few PAS leaders, including its Youth chief, on various issues.

He also said that the Kelantan government had withdrawn the offer for a debate between him and Mohamad Sabu.

“I had not asked for it (the debate). I was invited by the Kelantan government to debate with Mat Sabu. Therefore, I assume that there will be no debate as the original offer has been withdrawn by PAS,” he said.
