Nine Dead, Nearly 50 Injured In Delhi Blast
NEW DELHI, Sept 7 – Nine people were killed and nearly 50 injured in a morning bomb blast outside the High Court in the capital today, police said.
The incident happened outside one of the entry gates of the court complex where hundreds of people were queuing to enter the premises.
“It was a medium to high intensity blast and it created a deep crater at the site,”India’s Home Secretary R.K. Singh told the media.
It is suspected that the explosive was planted in a briefcase and placed near the gate.
This was the second bomb attack near the court in the last four months.
Last May, low-intensity bombs wrapped in a polythene bag were planted outside the court premises. But no casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, Home Minister P. Chidambaram briefed parliament on the incident and said the National Investigating Agency (NIA) had taken over the probe.
“It is not possible to identify the group that carried out the bomb attack at the moment.
“Delhiis a target of terrorist groups. We are determined to track them down,” he said.
The capital has been put on high alert.
